On January 4, 2025, President Biden signed into law the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experience Act (EXPLORE Act). The EXPLORE Act included a section initially drafted by the National Forest Recreation Association (NFRA) which gives the US Forest Service the authority to enter into 30-year permits for the purpose of facilitating major improvements on existing agency campgrounds. The section also authorizes similar large improvements on other sites as well as Bureau of Land Management (BLM) sites. NFRA is working with the Forest Service to assist it in implementing its new statutory authority.
