Freedom of Information Act

Your Government counsel.™

We assist our clients in obtaining valuable information from the Government through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).  When necessary, we assist our clients in pursuing appeals to the agencies and filing lawsuits to ensure that the Government does not improperly withhold information.

Knowledge is power.  Often times, the federal government has all the relevant information about an issue, and thus all the power.  The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a federal statute which can help you gain knowledge and, accordingly, help you gain back some of your power.  (For more information about the FOIA, visit http://www.foia.gov/.)  We routinely assist our clients in obtaining documents held by the government which provide insight into the basis for government decisions, which in turn educate our clients about the issues which are important to them.

As the government acknowledges, “the FOIA is a law that gives you the right to access information from the federal government.”   The FOIA is based on the principle that the government’s decisions should generally be transparent.

The FOIA allows you to seek non-exempt documents from federal agencies, including documents related to you, your operations, your competitor’s activities or to the activities of the government.

At times, the government refuses to produce documents under the FOIA.  When justified, we assist our clients in pursuing appeals to the agencies and, if necessary, filing lawsuits to ensure that the government does not improperly withhold information.
